Somewhat tongue in cheek I must ask whether or not your ability to obtain a future answer is equivalent to your ability to obtain an amnio in the future? If so, time would be an irrelevant concern.

7-10 days is most common for a full karyotype; 24-48 hours for FISH (realize, however, that FISH results have most applicability when a constellation of abnormalities is seen on U/S examination which suggest a specific trisomy and the FISH result is used to *confirm* a suspected U/S diagnosis). There have been plenty of instances where patients have been told results were normal by FISH, and later the diagnosis was amended because of rearrangements, uncommon aneuploidies, etc were detected by full karyotype. I suspect the situation will improve with CGH and whole chromosome painting technology does.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
