I have certainly heard the argument that ordering densitometry can give further persuasion to the patient to initiate the therapy. However, at the point that osteoporosis can be demonstrated, no therapy to date can replace that which is already lost. Further, it seems odd that we need to have an objective test in order to prove to the patient our therapy has beneficence. I can't think of too many other situations where one would order a fairly pricey test in order to convince the patient of the benefit of therapy. I certainly respect a patient's right to refuse any therapy I should suggest, but it seems odd to order a test to help me convince a patient to consider a therapeutic option.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
