bone densitometry

Interested to hear other's input re: bone densitometry (BMD). Our multispecialty clinic is interested in purchasing a unit, largely on intiative from the internists. My feeling is that to date, there are a lack of data to show that management of osteoporosis with bmd has a long term benefit. Further, if a patient is receiving optimal management, i.e. estrogen, little can be done to adjust the treatment except addition of alendronate. Further, this combination has not been studied in order to show any efficacy. Given these considerations, I have voiced opposition to this purchase. Would like to hear any other opinions.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
