Keillands: was Forceps Identification

Kiellands Forceps were popularised in the UK and Ireland after publication of a monograph on their use by E Parry Jones of Liverpool, and later North Wales. People often forget they were used in patients under GA, and a lot of traumatic deliveries were reported, and also severely damaged babies.

Parry Jones later advocated a forceps called Barton's Forceps, designed, I think by an American Engineer turned Gynaecologist called Barton. He believed these were much more suitable where a GA was not given.

These had an almost right angled curve of the posterior blade, and a hinged anterior blade, and were used with a traction rod. The handle was not used at all during the delivery.

Kind regards,

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
