Yes, it is your place to talk with her. She has reached out and confided in you. This gives you a perfect opportunity and an engraved invitation.

I would ask if she has any trusted adult friends or relatives she could turn to. I would explain the risk she is at for STDs (as evidenced by her chlamydia) and reinforce that she was right to be worried about AIDS and pregnancy. *Then* I would refer her on to a social worker, a minister or priest, and I would ask her to talk to her trusted adult friends or relatives. I would ask her if she had explored any other possible living situations where she would feel safe and cared for. Then, particularly if any of her male partners were older men (or men involved with her mother), I would be obligated to report this situation to Child Protective Services for intervention by the State. This truly is a horrible situation. Your heart must have been breaking as you listened to her story. I sincerely hope your intervention will help make the difference in saving this girl's life.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
