we have got a lot of malaria - including a lot of chloroquine resistance.

my advice: 1. do not go, do not go, do not go. 2. nigeria is known to have a very high incidence of resistance - mostly type3. 3. only chloroquine has been shown to be reasonably safe in 1st trimester, although not without complications. 4. malaria in pregnancy is a very serious disease - we are losing patients every day (mostly cerebral malaria and multi-organ failure) despite excellent care, including early ICU management. 5. if the patient really has to go - the most effective way of not contracting malaria is to make sure that you are not bitten by mosquitoes - excellent barrier methods have been developed over the last 2-3 years. contact me if you need further info. 6. be aware of the symptoms/signs of malaria - early treatment with the correct drugs and specific organ (esp. kidney) support is vital.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
