Re: Abdominal versus vaginal ultrasoundFrom: Suddoc@aol.comMon Nov 25 22:40:58 1996
In a message dated 96-11-24 23:29:36 EST, you write: << Why put the patient through the discomfort of the catheter with a full bladder, and the (probably small) risk of urinary tract infection when doing an abdominal scan when a vaginal ultrasound is much better at providing information with a 6 week pregnancy? The radiologist seemed to think I was out of my mind for suggesting he bypass abdominal scans on all my future patients with similar complaints. Any thoughts from the group? >> Our radiology department leaves it to the discretion of the ordering physician. If I am am worried about a possible ectopic pregnancy, I have never been given any useful additional information by the abdominal scan. A foley catheter is uncomfortable and unnecessary A transvaginal scan provides me with all the Ultrasound information I need most of the time in these situations Stephen Sudler, MD.
