Ashley,

Your radiologists are not unique. I had to beat our hospital radiologists on the head and accuse them of unethical behavior by doing both scans in order to boost their fees.

Before they acquiesced, on one occasion I politely dismissed the U/S tech and went over to my office, brought over my own machine and vaginal probe.

Their argument MAY have some merit if one is dealing with abdominal pain and there is a torsed adnexal mass beyond the range of the vaginal probe.

If the situation is one of early pregnancy bleed and one wishes to ascertain whether the pregnancy is intra or extrauterine then the delays, the risks and the discomfort do not justify the irrational insistence on first doing an abdominal scan.

It gave me great pleasure to talk one insurance company out of paying them for both scans when a vaginal scan was ordered.

I hope that this helps.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
