Several years ago I sent a questionaire to several years of hysterectomy patients. I asked 21 questions and asked that they answer each question twice--first for before hysterectomy, then for after hysterectomy. The answer was given by marking a number from 1 to 10. These numbers were already printed on the form, so all they had to do was circle a number. Five of the 21 questions regarded sexuality, and the one which applies most to this discussion was "enjoyment of orgasm".

There were 98 questionaires returned.

For 55, enjoyment was the same before and after (same number circled) For 13, enjoyment of orgasm was LESS after hysterectomy (smaller number circled after hysterectomy) For 17, enjoyment of orgasm was MORE after hysterectomy (larger number circled after hysterectomy} Thirteen did not respond to this question.

A couple patients commented on less intensity due to lack of uterine contractions.

When counselling patients prior to hysterectomy, I always review the potential risk of adverse affect on their sexuality. This is just one of the several factors which must be weighed prior to proceeding with a "quality of life" hysterectomy, ie one done for non life-threatening indications.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
