Re: scuba diving and pregnancyFrom: DoctorJoe@aol.comTue Oct 29 07:19:22 1996
<<I believe that scuba diving is contraindicated throughout pregnancy. The reasoning is that we do not know how the foetal circulation handles the nitrogen in solution at higher pressures, and how well it "de-gasses". The concern is that a nitrogen embolis could occur in the foetal circulation and cause damage in an asymptomatic mom. I guess this means that before circulation is established that diving would be ok.>> I would echo that, and say that except for surface diving (snorkeling to very shallow depths if at all), I would advise pregnant women NOT to scuba. I think immersion in water is good for the maternal circulation and fetal as well, but I think going down to higher pressures (and funny gas exchanges, as stated above) is potentially troublesome, if for no other reason than VAGINAL water inflow at high pressures. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
