Re: Ovarian CystsFrom: John Hellriegel (jhellrie@pce.net)Mon Oct 28 19:04:21 1996
From: "Esme J. Howard" <ejh@octet.com> Subject: ovarian cysts Dear List: Just a couple of questions re ovarian cysts: 1) would you feel comfortable diagnosing (definitively, not tentatively) on the basis of history and exam, no u/s? Ans: Yes and have. However, currently I obtain u/s to evaluate for simple cyst vs. complex cystic mass (combined cystic and solid). 2) any alternative treatment options (other than OCPs and surgery)? Ans: For small cysts, simple cysts, and some others -- i.e. those consistent with hemorrhagic cysts, no treatment (tincture of time) and re-evaluate after a menstrual cycle. 3) do you agree that having one does not predispose to recurrences? (not speaking of polycystic ovaries here) if so, could anyone expand upon the pathophysiology that explains this? and/or cite some research that backs it up? Ans: Yes, but some women do have a tendency to develop persistent functional cysts. These are probably due to hormone imbalances. I would hypothesize that these result from an imbalance in the hypothalamic- pituitary axis and/or an ovarian resistance to pituitary hormones as often seen in peri-menopausal women.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
