Drugs in PregnancyFrom: John Hellriegel (jhellrie@pce.net)Sun Oct 27 14:23:08 1996
Query: Adverse or teratogenic effects of Mellaril (thioridazine hydrochloride) and Norpramin (desipramine hydrochloride) on the fetus? Query: Do manic-depressive disorders have a familial predilection? Case: 30 year old, G0, P0 is taking Mellaril, 100 mg, qd and Norpramin, 150 mg, qd for manic-depression. She is considering pregnancy and asks if these medications will affect her fetus. My Medline search and text review of drugs in pregnancy did not turn up any adverse or teratogenic effects of these drugs for the fetus. However, I found no information concerning their combined use. I recall reading somewhere that there is a 30% to 40% risk of the child of a mother with manic-depression developing the same problem. Is this true? Does anyone have references or an expert opinion? Should this patient be counseled that there is a "significant" risk that her baby will develop a manic-depressive disorder? Thanks for you help and opinions. -- John Hellriegel, Jr., MD, PhD Buffalo, NY jhellrie@pce.net

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
