What you describe seems to me to be an example of how we sometimes lose sight of our ultimate goal...providing safe, effective care to our clients. Rather than get into a power struggle, if disciplines would cooperate and consider the client's well-being the ultimate goal, this would be a non-issue. Mutual respect for each discipline's role and responsibilities would encourage this process. As a nursing faculty member and clinician, I promote this type of relationship among my students at every opportunity.

As far a nurses withholding treatment when they are uncomfortable with it, it may well be within their right to do so. They also have a license and scope of practice to consider and as professionals, are expected be ever mindful of those responsibilities. However, there should be a mechanism in place so that the physicians are informed when the plan of care is altered . These decisions should also be made on the basis of information, rather than misinformation or making clinical decisions without any basis in proven research, theory or documented standards of practice. Communication is key here, as well as a trusting relationship.

We can all make a difference, enhance our care to our clients and each other through mutual respect.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
