PA is the abbreviation for Physician Assistant. PA-C is the abbrieviation for Physician Assistant Certified.

What is a Physician Assistant. PA?

PAs practice medicine with supervision by licensed physicians. As members of a health care team, PAs provide a broad range of medical services that would otherwise be provided by physicians.

The relationship between a physician and a PA is one of mutual trust and reliance. The PA's responsibility depends on the type of practice, his or her experience, the working relationship with the physician and state laws.

What do PAs do?

The scope of practice of the individual PA varies. The PA often provides wellpatient care to include: * routine physical examinations * pap smears * contraception * health promotion and disease prevention * prenatal care

PAs diagnose and treat a variety of conditions and perform such Procedures as: * endometrial and vulvar biopsies * ultrasound * cryotherapy * colposcopy and LEEP

Can PAs perform surgery?

PAs perform Surgical services from minor office or out-patient surgery to serving as a first assist in major obstetrical, gynecological and general surgical procedures. many PAs have extensive formal training in surgical subspecialties Can PAs deliver babies? Obstetrics is part of PA education. State laws, hospital regulations, physician preference and the training and expertise of the PA influence the extent to which PAs provide obstetrical services.

Can PAs write prescriptions?

PAs can write prescriptions in most states plus the District of Columbia and Guam. Last year, PAs handled more than 150 million patient visits in the US and wrote 133 million prescriptions.

How did the PA profession begin?

The PA profession was founded at Duke University in 1965. The first class of PAs graduated from Duke on October 6, 1967. There are now over 60 accredited PA programs and over 30,000 PAs practicing in the United States.

What education do PAs have?

PAs are educated in a medical model. The average PA program is 102 weeks in length while the average medical school is 153 weeks. PAs are educated in the basic medical sciences followed by clinical rotations including: * Family/General Medicine * Obstetrics & Gynecology * Emergency Medicine Surgery * Pediatrics * Psychiatry * Internal Medicine

A certificate or academic degree is awarded upon graduation. After graduating from an accredited program, PAs Sit for national certifying examination developed by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. In order to maintain their certification, PAs must pass a reexamination every six years and complete 100 hours of continuing education every two years. National certification allows the PA to use the initials "PA-C."

How are PAs Regulated?

Virtually every state has a board that regulates PAs on behalf of consumers. These boards issue licenses to PAs that have met rigorous standards and work to ensure that PAs provide the highest standards of care. State laws and regulations define the PA profession in each state, establish registration and competency requirements, as well as the responsibilities of the supervising physician.

What Impact do PAs have?

PAs, working with physicians, provide better distribution of health care services, and improve access to those services, and especially in rural and medically undeserved areas. Patient Waiting times are reduced and they have more time for questions, counseling and education. These factors help to increase the level of Patient understanding and adherence to medical treatment, Which in turn reduces the cost of health care.

What is the Current status of PAs in the US?

Health reform pressures have increased the demand for Primary care health providers such as PAs. They can be found in nearly every medical practice and in nearly every type of town. Most clinical PAs practice family medicine, and more than one third are found in towns with fewer than 50,000 residents.

Approximately 70% of all practicing PAs work in public and private clinics, for HMOs, and for medical practices. The remaining 30% work in hospitals. PAs also serve as commissioned officers in all branches of the military and serve on the White House medical team that provides care for the president and the vice president.

The quality of care provided by PAs has been extensively analyzed by both private and public researchers during the past 27 years. They have concluded that PAs Provide quality medical care, can handle approximately 80% of the patients in a general practice, and can do so at a lower cost to the health care system. A PA's education is approximately one fourth the cost Of a physician's education,

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
