A couple more HIV questionsFrom: CNMMOM@aol.comSat Oct 12 03:04:05 1996
Dear list, As I got so much assistance for my last query r/t HIV and pregnancy, my preceptor at the HIV clinic where I am doing a rotation in primary care and I would like to ask a couple more questions: 1. How often do you get false-positive ELISA tests (i.e. unconfirmed by Western Blot), and are these clients more likely to be multiparas rather than primigravidas? Since pregnancy is one condition that can lead to false positives, is someone who has had multiple pregnancies more likely to have a false positive than a primigravida? 2. If you have a client who had a negative ELISA in pregnancy, but has a positive one in Labor and Delivery (i.e. as yet unconfirmed Western Blot status), do you treat her with AZT in labor? Does Peds treat the baby? (Is there any choice?) In the case of the mother, if she is truly HIV positive, and a new converter, would the one or at most 2 doses of AZT she would get prior to delivery really help her (or her baby)? Would it be reasonable to allow the client to make this decision based on informed consent? TIA (Thanks in advance) Elizabeth Davidson, CNM Brownsville, Texas

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
