<<I have a query. Instead of discarding away (or burying for some people) the placenta after delivery, would anyone know what are some of the uses of placenta for medical and non-medical purposes.>>

1. Placenta Helperr Just kidding! But seriously, there are some cultures (the Laotians come to my memory but I may be wrong) who eat the placenta after delivery, as much for nutritional as ritual reasons.

2. Cosmetics We USED to get requests for placentas to be used for their protein/hormone content, I guess, from cosmetics people. I don't know if that's still in vogue, since HIV came on the scene.

3. Burial Some cultures consider the placenta a "twin" of sorts, and have a ritual burial, as though it were actually a stillborn baby.

4. Stem cells The blood within the cord and placenta can be banked for stem cell transfusion (as we've discussed on this list recently). We've had at least one patient here at LSU who received a cord blood stem cell transplant from a new baby sibling... I don't know how he's doing.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
