This may not be PC (politically Correct), but it has been reported that achieveing orgasm will sometimes relieve the pain of pelvic congestion. On occasion when I have discussed this with patients and they have tried it, there has been a success. On other occasions it hasn't worked. At least it is something worth trying and usually doesn't lead to complications.

Would be interested to hear the theory behind this, but if it works why not!

The other thing that often gets overlooked in the management of these patients is the value of reassurance. Tell the patient, "Hey! this isn't going to kill you. There is no evidence of cancer. There is no ongoing worsening infection." Sometimes, this will be enough for the patient to quit worrying about the pain and when she quits worrying about it, it gets better. Or sometimes she will say Gee I can live with this if it isn't going to kill me. These patients require a lot of patience. (Pun Intended) Frequently the time and effort spent may be well rewarded with the satisfaction of having avery relieved patient.

And this is why I always say OBGYN is at least as much art as it is science. How very true.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
