Re: IUD and actinomycesFrom: Malcolm Griffiths (Malcolm@mgriff22.demon.co.uk)Wed Jul 31 12:18:25 1996
In message <199607302210.XAA16583@afrodita.adam.es>, "Francisco L. Romero" <fromero@adam.es> writes >Recently i took out a IUD from an assymptomatic young woman because she has >Actinomyces in the PAPsmear and treated with ampicilina. > >However, other gynecologists here in Barcelona don't take out the IUD just >only give ampicilina. Here we have no a standard management. > >What do the listers do? I'm usually very sceptical. Theroretically they shouldn't really be seen except in association with non-copper IUCDs - which ( in UK at least ) we never use. There are other thread-like organisms than Actinomyces ( some cytologists don't actually appreciate that the actual size of the organism may give a big clue here ). Supposedly very long courses of penicillins are required ( 6 weeks ) in addition to the removal of the IUCD to eradicate the infection. That we no longer see pelvic infection due to actinomyces ( now we've got rid of Dalkon Shield ), my guess is that this means this organism is largely irrelevant in this setting and I'd prefer my cytologist to tell me about the cytology, and leave the microbiologist to tell me about the bugs !

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
