Re: How much do obstetricians think they're worth? From: Anna Nickels (102476.2066@CompuServe.COM)Wed Jul 24 14:32:41 1996
>If you continue to do $25 dollar >per hour tasks, then that is what you ultimately will be worth.
>Anyone else think this statement reveals greed and arrogance?
>No!
>Its the old "value is as value does" theory...or am I misquoting it?
>(BTW, you're an MBA. Tell me why I cant retire on my Apple stock?)
>Gary Thank you, John. It has been my experience as an OB nurse for 17 years that the docs AND midwives who come across with the attitude that you quoted are the same ones who fail to recognize and utilize the NURSING knowledge that the staff can provide, become disliked by the nursing staff for acting arrogant, and, eventually, are labelled as skilled technicians who don't really care about their patients. The most liked docs and midwives, as any RN will tell you, are the ones who act as team members and colleagues and who value every act that will assist the patient to have a good experience (and, hopefully, outcome). We all recognize that there are many things that MDs/CNMs do that RNs can't. We all know that there are times for heroics in OB/Gyn. We all hope that we all share the same goals. Gary- "Value is as value does"... Hmmm... is that why some of the docs at my last hospital would sleep through the clinic patients' deliveries and have the RN "just catch the kid and call me if the placenta doesn't deliever within 30 min. or if she tears"... same with most all IUFDs, genetic terminations... "give her anything up to 15 of morphine before you call me and if she's 5-6cms, call anesthesia first"... "don't call me until you have the pit at at least 36Mu"... I don't mean to sound disrespectful, but I hope that you don't think that this is worth $100. Just my 2 cents worth-- Anna Romig Nickels, RNC, BSN / Washington, DC

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
