F.D.A. Panel Backs Abortion Drug RU-486From: D. G. Huffman (perinatl@slip.net)Sat Jul 20 09:21:34 1996
F.D.A. Panel Backs Abortion Drug RU-486 GAITHERSBURG, Md. Meeting in a windowless building here amid unusual security precautions, a committee of advisers to the Food and Drug Administration recommended Friday that the agency approve for marketing the abortion-inducing drug RU-486, or mifepristone. The recommendation follows more than a decade in which American abortion politics has kept the drug, easily available in France, Britain and Sweden, out of the United States. The committee decided that the drug was safe and effective. In so doing, it set in motion a process that may dramatically change abortion procedure, and abortion politics, in the United States. Dr. David Kessler, the Commission-er of Food and Drugs, said Friday that the agency's goal was to make a final decision by mid-September. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
