Re: acyclovir in pregnancyFrom: MBK80@aol.comThu Jul 18 09:25:54 1996
I HAVE SEEN MANY CASES OF ACTIVE HSV IN LATE THIRD TRIMESTER AND HAVE WONDERED FOR YEARS IF WE MIGHT REDUCE THE C/S RATE IN THESE PATIENTS WITH PROPHYLACTIC ZOVIRAX STARTING AT LETS SAY 36 WEEKS OR SO. I AM AWARE THAT THERE ARE ONGOING STUDIES LOOKING AT THIS AND THAT THERE IS A ZOVIRAX REGISTRY WITH BURROUGHS WELLCOME OF BABYS EXPOSED TO ZOVIRAX. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT EXPERIENCE TO DATE REVEALS NO INCREASED RISKS OF ANOMALIES. WE DO NOT USE ZOVIRAX IN PREGNANCY BUT I UNDERSTAND SEVERAL COMMUNITIES (I'M TOLD MIAMI IS ONE) ARE AND HAVE BEEN USING IT. I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN HEARING ANY FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE EITHER CLINICALLY OR IN RESEARCH. JAY M KULKIN, MD, FACOG ATLANTA, GA GO OLYMPICS

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
