Re: acyclovir in pregnancyFrom: DoctorJoe@aol.comThu Jul 18 08:54:38 1996
<<what is your opinion (and practice) re: use of acyclovir in non-immunocomprimised pregnant women for 1) primary HSV outbreak 2) recurrent HSV outbreak 3) prophylaxis to reduce chance of outbreak near term?>> Officially, I think acyclovir is only used during pregnancy for evidence of severe maternal disease (e.g., hepatitis, encephalitis). However... 1) I think in a primary infection, especially with systemic symptoms, you can get some mileage out of acyclovir in shortening the outbreak and ameliorating symptoms. After all, besides not wanting dissemination, you would like not to have systemic symptoms incite uterine activity, etc. 2) I don't think people routinely use acyclovir for simple recurrences during pregnancy. 3) Acyclovir as prophylaxis near term (meaning, acyclovir as prophylaxis against C-section) is, if I'm not mistaken, being looked at in a study somewhere right now. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
