Prescriptive AuthorityFrom: CNMPAT@aol.comSat Jul 13 14:38:12 1996
<< So CNM's have prescription rights for antibiotics. I'm not arguing against your protocol, just noticing this fact. Our midwives do not have this right (but they can prescribe OC's and a few other drugs). Mats Bergstrom, MD Ob Gyn South Hospital Stockholm >> In WA state we can prescribe almost anything except Schedule I-IV. This at the moment also includes the new weight control drugs Fastin and Pondimin, but it is fairly easy to prescribe within our office (the nurses can do it under our OBs name). We've had this authority for several years now, and it is quite helpful, to say the least. We are pushing for more authority, though sometimes it's nice not to worry about the abuse of narcotics !! In WA state nitially we complete at least a 30 hour course specifically on pharmacology, and then every two years must complete 15 hours specificlaly pharmacology, in addition to 30 hours of other coursework. The ACNM has different requirements. Individuals of course have different levels of competence once they prescribe.... The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
