You pose an interesting question. Yesterday I recieved a prospectus from a physician owned managed health care plan in FL. It was approved by the State Medical Association and there were offers of low interest loans as an incentive to join. The group wants to raise 30 million with shareholders investing $5000 to $50,000 each. The concept seems reasonable but I disposed of the flier for the following reasons:

1. Although I am not wealthy, I am doing well enough not to need the extra cash

2. I am unqualified to assess both the risk and liability involved. The prospectus might be reassuring but I have no idea whether a slick lawyer couldn't incur a liability for me which exceeds my investment. I have no idea if I can turn a profit. I am too busy to assess the market and track my investment.

3. The plan is too small to provide benefits to the majority of my patients. Therefore, I doubt that it will make a difference in the quality of health care in my region nor will it guarantee that my patients will be treated ethically by insurers. Health plans which do not act in the patient's best interest will still be operating. I doubt that the physician's plan will make them perform in a more ethical manner.

4. I agree that managed care entities must be held accountable to their insurees. I make a concerted effort to question any medically unsound decision by these organizations. I routinely seek support from: the patient; employer (group subscriber); State Medical Boards and regulatory organizations; ACOG and this list.

I would be curious about other opinions regarding physician owned health plans.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
