Microbubbles can occur even if the diver is within the tables and microbubbles in the placenta can be devastating. Microbubbles are more likely to form in areas where there is sluggish circulation ie the intervillous space. Yet another reason for proscribing scuba diving is that nitrogen will remain in the fetal circulation after it is washed out of the maternal circulation. Therefore this can cause decompression sickness in the fetus even though the mother has no problems. Being a diver tell the patient that I empathize with her as I had to postpone diving for some time after my back surgery. Peter

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
