I'm always dismayed at the referrals I get for women with small and asymptomatic fibroids that are found on ultrasound, after a routine exam yields a slightly enlarged and nodular uterus. Many of these women have been conditioned to think "hysterectomy" whenever someone mentions "fibroids," and they are often surprised when I tell them they can come back next year and do not need surgical intervention. On the other hand, one patient recently came in with a few small fibroids, after being told by 3 different Ob/Gyns that she "needed a hysterectomy or else the fibroids would continue to grow and someday cause problems." Her allegations were documented by copies of medical records from the other 3 doctors. I wonder if this represents ignorance about these common tumors, or is a way for a doctor to increase income. Both are bad, but the former is less so.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
