Newborn ThrombocytopeniaFrom: Hellriegel, John (jhellrie@ubmedd.buffalo.edu)Tue May 28 23:36:45 1996
Case: Newborn with thrombocytopenia detected after birth. Mother with lowish platelets (120,000 range) and antiplatelet antibodies (IgG) to the baby's platelets. The mother's antiplatelet antibodies react with antigens on both the baby's and father's platelets. This was her third child and only newborn with thrombocytopenia (as far as we know). The pediatrician told the mother to "never, never get pregnant again". Questions: Words of wisdom for counseling the patient? How would you manage the case if she becomes pregnant again? References for this phenomenon and management? John C. Hellriegel, MD, PhD jhellrie@ubmedd.buffalo.edu

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
