To me "bona fide" ITP is as Ken Mosie says, either diagnosed before pregnancy, or a nadir below 75,000, where gestational thrombocytopenics seem not to go. The thrombocytopenia should be isolated (i.e. no neutropenia or anemia), and without hypertension. Onset early in pregnancy, in the first or early second trimester, is also favorable for ITP as opposed to gestational. It is NOT always an easy call.

On another note, the post regarding the comment "it always seems to happen to families of those in medicine", I agree that those saying that are insensitive. Moreover, they are showing their ignorance: it simply is not true.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
