Dear Dr Klein,

I very much appreciated your essay regarding "caring for family members. It struck home to me. Living in a small town in Montana, and being one of only 5 primary providers in the area, the issues you brought up are very pertinent here.

I have returned from a 5 wk stay in Germany where I supported my daughter through a lovely VBAC of an 8 lb boy. She delivered at a Army hospital and with the help of careful birth planning, had a lovely experience. A military hospital and a good birth experience would seem to be conflicting issues, but not so in this case.

Her first birth was complicated by severe HELLP syndrome and was a gift from hell. She delivered by Csection at 28 wks. From the moment we hit the doors of the Level 3 hospital she was medivac'd to, I heard this refrain countless times: "This sort of thing ALWAYS seems to happen to medical people or their families".

I resented this statement the first time I heard it, but by the 20th time I was ready to rip the speaker's head off and spit in his/her neck. Eventually I realized that I was feeling guilty for being a medical professional, that if I were not a CNM/FNP, then Kari would not be sick! Sounds crazy, but these were crazy times and I was frantic with fear for my daughter and grandson.

I guess the point of this is to remind those caring for families of medical professionals to use some thought and sensitivity before making statements like those above.

Again, thank you for the essay. I have saved it in hard copy and will share it with my collegues.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
