Chromic sutures ( was Double laceration)From: Malcolm Griffiths (Malcolm@mgriff22.demon.co.uk)Sun May 26 01:15:47 1996
In message <9605251921.AA01038@mercury>, rossmann@MEM.po.com writes > >Is there still any justification for using chromic catgut in ob-gyn now >when we have Vicryl and other synthetic sutures? I'm not aware that there is compelling evidence that Vicryl/Dexon are superior to Chromic in *all* situations. I am aware that there are fewer vault granulations and fewer abdo dehiscences if you avoid Chromic in the vault and rectus sheath, but in some situations it matters very little and cost then may be a factor. Occasionally there are situations when I prefer Chromic: bleeding friable & oedematous uteri in various circumstances (inc. cornual ectopic); classical CS; obstetric hysterectomy. In all of these the "give" and resilience of Chromic is useful, whereas Vicryl/Dexon don't have that give and can cut through.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
