nabothian cyst biopsyFrom: BLAIR, BILLIE (BLAIRB@pcmail.cbil.vcu.edu)Mon May 20 18:05:18 1996
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I thought I would introduce myself, I am currently finishing up my first -------------------------------------------------------------------------- year at the Medical College of Virginia. I began subscribing to this list this fall, since I plan to pursue obstetrics and gynecology. Two months ago my mother was diagnosed with a melanoma (Stage II, nodular, 1.2mm deep). She was advised to have a pap and physical. She went to her PCP, who found several nabothian cysts. My mother said they recommended a biopsy of one that was particularly large. Essentially my question is why are they doing a biopsy without the results of the pap. Do you think they are just being extremely cautious due to her history of melanoma? My concern is that she really scared my mother, who is also very hard of hearing, by telling her this was "a very abnormal finding" that needed to be followed up every six months. I am very supportive of being cautious due to her history, however, I am wondering why she acted as if this cyst was so abnormal. Does the size of the cyst matter? All the research I've done indicates that these cysts are relatively common and a biopsy without an abnormal pap is not necessary. So when is a biopsy recommeded? Thank you very much for your time Billie Yvonne Blair

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
