Re: compression stockingsFrom: OBDocRick@aol.comThu May 9 10:03:22 1996
It is hard for me to understand the need for these stockings in a c-section, with the prone position, right hip roll and quick procedure. In pelviscopy we use intermittant compression stocking during the procedure, but never after, because they would inhibit post op ambulation. The rational for their use is the flexion of the knees can cause stasis. Post c-section, I want my patients to a chair by 12 hours or less, if possible, while the duramorph is still in effect, and OOB in the next AM. I would think these stocking would limit movement in this case. Stasis due to uterine compression of the vena cava...perhaps. Would they prevent septic pelvic thrombophlebitis? I think you would need a huge cohort to study that question. In the navy we could never get the stockings in the first place (at least in Spain that was true.) How much added cost for what benefit? Sorry for the ramble Rick

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
