RE<<< but rarely do I ask if is okay to >strip membranes,>>>

Well, I've talked to a few pretty annoyed women, whose previous care providers had stripped their membranes without permission!

I wouldn't consider doing it without full discussion "before" beginning the vaginal exam. Some women might want it and some might not -- I think we need to give them the choice. And consider some of the fundamentalist religious groups who believe strongly that the time of birth is appointed by God -- they view convenience induction to be somewhat sinful. They may greatly disaprove of "being stripped" without their agreement!

We all have our personal styles. My own personal rule is that I don't touch a woman ANYWHERE or do ANYTHING to her without her full foreknowlege and consent... It might be a quick discusssion such as "You're bleeding heavilly. I need to rub your uterus to start a contraction, OK?" or it might prolonged discussion if we have time -- but mom is always in charge!

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
