>Posture is so important. If he acts like he screwed up, that's what I think it helps to say one is sorry. This is no admission of guilt but shows the patient and family that one is human and empathize with them about the mishap/maloccurence or whatever. It makes me feel better too, BTW. I once also perforated large bowel with the laparospcope, and had to open to repair. I went to see the patient when she woke to explain what occured, stating that this is a recognised complication - and apologized that it happened. I went back to do the same when her husband arrived on the ward. They have never sued (that was back in 1986). Admittedly, this was in the UK, but we are 'catching up' in the medicolegal stakes. I have no time for the old way - the stiff upper lip or 'unphased' approach is to get too defensive and not admit anything or even 'lawyer up' (I love that term from NYPD Blues!) and /or leave everything to hospital administration. I am not saying that all litigation can be avoided but often prevailing attitudes can get patients and their families' backs up which is when the lawyers get that cheshire cat grin, like: :] jason.gardosi@nottingham.ac.uk OB/GYN, Queen's Medical Centre University of Nottingham, UK

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
