Cesarean hysterectomy

Joe Pastorek asked whether I believe cesarean hysterectomy should be taught routinely in a residency program to avoid the situation where a young attending with minimal experience would be faced with a procedure as an emergency. I feel that unfortunately, cesearean section is becoming a dying art like forceps. Even at our busy obstetrical program (6400 deliveries/year) we have several of our 12 senior residents that graduate without having performed a single procedure. I would agree that we should make a greater effort to perform elective procedures so that training does not have to take place in the hypotensive patient.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
