Re: Fevers following an epiduralFrom: Douglas Krell (sfth@roadrunner.com)Tue Apr 16 22:53:55 1996
Dear Pat, A suspicious grouping of fevers such as this might well be investigated by the epidemiology nurse in our hospital occasionally in conjuction with infection control committee. Oftentimes we are confronted with what seems to be trend that later proves to be unfortunate coincidence. But to be certain, one needs to have the fevers worked up thorougly and a careful search for cause and effect undertaken. The most common cause of temperature elevation / fever in our laboring patients with an epidural is chorioamnionitis (documented by placental pathology). Dehydration and a faulty cooling system would be number 2, and 3 is concurrent viral syndromes. We would simply suggest you review retrospectively the medical records from cases in which maternal fever developed.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
