There is a specific federal law that limits HMOs liability to the cost of the service not provided - all medical liability is shouldered by the doc. The only thing he advised is to document every single attempt you make to try and convince the HMO that the treatment is needed so at least you tried. The recent review of "informed refusal" was also relevent.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
