> >How and why does one inspect the cervix in left lateral? > >Lily Kay CNM MS 1. How: Left lat. position, mother nicely curled up, backside out over edge of bed; angle speculum posteriorly; easier opening of bivalve; good view of pool, if any, in lateral fornix; good view of cervix. Similar to positioning for scalp blood sampling (I am sure nobody does that in lithotomy any more ?!) 2. Why: a. Baby: happier - knowing that less likelihood of aortocaval compression. b. Mother: more comfortable and mostly covered up; +pillow between knees c. Midwife: glad not to have to set up stirrups etc d. Doctor: sitting down next to bed rather than between legs and dirty feet. Aseptic setup easy to get to. At eye level with introitus, with light from end of bed usually giving excellent view. jason.gardosi@nottingham.ac.uk OB/GYN, Queen's Medical Centre University of Nottingham, UK

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
