Re: 13yo in ORFrom: hribot@obdoc.is.netWed Mar 20 05:56:46 1996
<I think it's a great idea. Perhaps if more 13 year olds were involved in their parent's birthing process, they would be less inclined to become involved in the genesis of their own! Allan T. Bombard, MD Reproductive Genetics MMC/AECOM Bronx, NY> Unfortunately, in reply to the above I must share my experience here in northwest Georgia over the past 10 years. This area is quite possibly the "unwed teenage pregnancy capital of the USA" and I have quite liberally allowed siblings in to observe their (slightly) older sisters' births. The usual chuckling among the L+D folks always includes the cynical 'maybe this [especially a non-epidural delivery] will be good birth control' when little Ashley Nicole gets to be _____ (13, 14, 15, etc.). However, I have seen over and over and over when the little girl subsequently comes in, pregnant at that same 13-15 age. The problem goes much deeper. I can't tell you how many 30 year old grandmothers I've seen. There is no "shame" anymore. These pregnancies are celebrated with baby showers, and gone are the days when if a teen got pregnant, she was quietly sent to her "aunt's" house far away where she then gave up the baby for adoption and returned home, sadder but wiser and her future not derailed. It is a definite higher education killer, let me tell you. Sorry for my rant. Hugo Hugo D. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
