As a pediatric nurse educator and nurse practitioner I can support the family in wanting a 13 year old in the ER. Nurse discomfort is often nurse workload, resistence to change - it is easier to just say its hospital policy. Developmentally the child is likely to benefit from the experience and the family will be supported by the health care providers. As far as hospital policy goes - when I was a nursing student on a pediatric rotation in 1965 parents were allowed to visit their own children from 2 to 4 and 7-8. One reason was to reduce infections. It took a lot to get nurses to deal with the "hassle" of parents.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
