It is an insidious process pervading the entire practice of medicine, be it obgyn, psychiatry (see WSJ series on managed care and mental health) or any other facet of our profession which WE HAVE ALLOWED to be ruled by the legal & business community whose only concern is the bottom line. Unless and until we as professionals and our patients realize that there can be NO compromise where medical care and ethics is concerned, I am afraid we will remain in the minority. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
