Re: fetal monitoring--response to Dr. NageyFrom: Wendy.Funk (wfunk@hanfs03.ha.osd.mil)Tue Dec 26 11:08:52 1995
Hi All ! Happy Holidays.... I'm a lurker finally compelled to speak up. By the way, I'm a maternal and child health epidemiologist, not an OB, but find the list fascinating... It is very helpful to hear clinical perspectives on all the work I do... Thanks to all... Anyway, here's my .02 $ on the fetal monitoring debate.... Certainly everyone does expect a healthy perfect baby... After all, that's the only way it is portrayed in the media... Who ever sees a tv show with a Trisomy 13/18 baby... or even a cleft lip or palette?..... Women should be better informed that all outcomes are not perfect, and it should be stressed that in fact the majority of babies born with these problems are NOT to women over 35... Lots of times there are no risk factors at all.... On the other hand, women should also not be lulled into a false sense of security just because AFP is normal or a sono appears okay. There are no guarantees and that should be specifically brought up to the pt after all tests.... Even amnio is no guarantee, there could always be a cord complication later down the road... Studies show that women who sue rate communication with their physicians very poorly.... Just my thoughts.....

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
