Re: responsibility/promises???From: MS GAIL M HART (YTDP43A@prodigy.com)Mon Dec 25 13:40:44 1995
-- [ From: Gail Hart * EMC.Ver #2.10P ] -- RE<<We in the practice of Ob-Gyn are forced to deal with the simple fact that every expectant parent comes with the ideal that they are ENTITLED to a perfectly healthy, normal, intelligent, defect free infant, no discomfort during labor, and no complications as a result of the process of being pregnant. Well guess what... that is an impossible task.<<< We have a "what if?" discussion with our clients early in pregnancy. It's really true that many American (US) women seem to feel that they are guaranteed a healthy baby - just by the simple act of becoming pregnant! That any potential problems will be discovered and "fixed"; and if anything does go wrong it must be "someone's' fault. We talk about the fact that not every baby concieved will be carried close enough to term, not all babies are perfect, not all problems can be forseen. Sometimes we see problems which can't be fixed and there is no more guarantee of perfect health for birth than for any of us alive on earth... A perfect baby today could be a car accident coma case three years from now. We "expect" that all will go well, but must realize the possibility of miscarriage, stillbirth or defects. It's a hard discussion for most of us -- we want a promise that all will go well with our births. It just ain't so... Perhaps doctors are victims of the TV god-hero image The promise of the perfect baby implied by the media and ready technology just can't be kept. And some things will always be beyond human control! We can only do our best.....

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
