PeanutsFrom: MS GAIL M HART (YTDP43A@prodigy.com)Mon Dec 25 13:31:31 1995
-- [ From: Gail Hart * EMC.Ver #2.10P ] -- Yep, a letter in Dear Abby really did advise obstetricians and pediatricians to warn about peanuts. Nope, not about aflotoxins (that might even be reasonable<G>). The letter was from a relative of a child who died as a result of severe alergy to peanuts. The writer believed ) that a child can be sensitized to peanuts if his/her mother eats them while pregnant -- so OBs etc should advise their clients to avoid peanuts in order to avoid potential allergies in the baby. I almost wrote this list about that letter but someone beat me to it! Is this true?? Can moms "make" their babies become sensitized to foods which moms consume? Many in this region limit milk, eggs and wheat products for this reason... Isn't this just a variation of the "maternal marking" belief? or is there some sense to it? Does it just SOUND "nutty", or is it TRULY a nutty idea?!<G> And am I going to get dragged into court because I recomend peanut butter to my clients?<sigh...can't win for losing>

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
