Re: symphysiotomyFrom: Danny Tucker (73064.3507@compuserve.com)Wed Dec 20 08:37:22 1995
There has been one of the above performed at our hospital in the last few years that's been recounted to us in teaching sessions by the unfortunate chap who was landed with it. I don't know if there have been any others. We have about 6000 del's/year. Patient had a trial of mid-cavity forceps delivery in the OR. Shoulder dystocia became apparent and standard manoevures were unsuccessful. Neither the Registrar or Prof (who was present teaching some medical students at the time) had seen one done, so the Reg put a catheter in and did a symphysiotomy. Only afterwards he found that you're supposed to cut from the outside down to the symphysis, not starting in the vagina....! Baby ok.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
