Re: Acyclovir & herpesFrom: Danny Tucker (73064.3507@compuserve.com)Mon Dec 18 15:04:28 1995
>Would you under any circumstances give a 24 week gestation patient with very symptomatic primary herpes IV acyclovir? Which ones? What would be the indication for using IV acyclovir? Taken orally the drug reduces time lesion is present and viral shedding - didn't know there was data to show improvement by IV administration...... unless she's NBM for some other reason. Any reason the attack is so extensive - ?immunocomprimised in addition to pregnancy. Topical acyclovir is useless for primary attacks and next-to-useless for secondary. Our unit has moved over to prescribing only lignocaine gel for secondary genital herpes.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
