Would you RECOMMEND that a patient undergo ELECTIVE surgery (say a tummy tuck or hemmoroidectomy) during the post partum period? How about if the patient were your wife or sister or daughter? Wouldn't you be the least bit concerned that such an ELECTIVE procedure could be done at a "safer" time, say after the puepruem? (Or are the physiologic changes in coagulation, wound healing and maternal immunity associated with pregnancy, instantly corrected at the moment of birth and no longer of any concern to maternal well being?) I would assert, as a matter of consistancy, that the risks to a patient from an elective procedure during the post partum period (though they are small) are unacceptably larger than after the post partum period. Convience rarely makes for the best impetus to perform surgery. Respectfully,

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
