Adverse Effects: Estrogen/ProgestinsFrom: Hellriegel, Jr. John (JHellrie@ubmedd.buffalo.edu)Sat Dec 9 16:18:27 1995
Questions: Is Depo Provera or are progestins associated with an increased incidence of deep vein thrombosis or thrombosis of any organ system? Is Premarin associated with an increased incidence of thrombocytopenia? I have been using Depo Provera and Provera to treat postmenopausal symptoms in patients who have had breast cancer. Recently I was advised that I was placing these patients at increased risk for thrombosis due to the progestins. Except for three references in the Japanese literature (I do not understand Japanese), I have not been unable to find papers which demonstrate a link between progesterone, or Provera and thrombosis. I have a patient who is taking Premarin, 0.625 qd and is mildly thrombocytopenic. Her internist has told that the thrombocytopenia is caused by the Premarin and that she should stop it immediately. I am unable to find papers which demonstrate a link between thrombocytopenia and ERT. Your comments and references to these topics will be appreciated. John Hellriegel jhellrie@ubmedd.buffalo.edu

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
