Okay I guess it's a good time to revisit my true-life adventure.

When I was a resident, we were running a study out of our OB clinic and one of the study nurses was pregnant. After we saw the last patient, the nurse asked us whether we could tell if her baby, about 22-24 weeks or so, was "still breech."

We put her up on one of the exam tables and did a little Leopolding around and told her that the baby felt vertex, but it could move around at this point and nothing was definitive until she got closer to term. We then asked her why she wanted to know.

She said she was worried if the baby were breech at delivery and asked about the risks of vaginal breech delivery versus c-section.

Well, we gave her the party line at the time -- probably no difference for the most part, but if the baby delivered breech and the head got stuck, say, then maybe the baby would lose a few IQ points or whatever. But then, instead of being a doctor, maybe he'd "only" be a lawyer. Usually, nobody would know the difference and nobody would care.

Well, she broke into laughter. We asked her why, of course.

She told us that she and her husband had an ongoing discussion about vaginal breech delivery. He INSISTED that there was nothing wrong with vaginal breech delivery and by the way, HE was a breech delivered vaginally and he turned out JUST FINE! End of story!

Of course, were were interested -- we asked what he did for a living.

She laughed again and told us ... he was a LAWYER.

I rest my case.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
