The reason is financial and legal. If you purchase IUDs or any other medical product out of country and bill Medicare or Medicaid as if you purchased them from a US supplier, pocketing the difference as profit, you have defrauded the government and will be audited, could lose your ability to participate in those programs and could go to jail.

Listers:

Have any of you ordered Mirenas or ParaGards from any source outside the U.S.? If the IUD is manufactured by Berlex/Schering for use in the United Kingdom - and last time I checked British uteri behaved identically to American ones - can anyone provide a reason why one shouldn't use such a product here in the U.S.?

I know folks who have ordered Mirenas from north of the border for a considerably lower cost than that of the only "authorized" U.S. source.

Anyone in the USA (especially in California) have any credible evidence of financial or legal repercussions to practitioners as a result of usage of these IUDs? I heard a story (from a former Berlex drug rep) alleging that a physician was forced to reimburse insurance company (or companies) for the difference between these device prices because the IUDs were "not FDA approved".

DuraMed (subsidiary of Barr Pharmaceuticals) the marketer of the ParaGard copper IUD recently sent out a "Dear Healthcare Professional" letter warning against a foreign "unapproved product" called "T-Safe CU 380A QL" which they say is significantly different from the official ParaGard in terms of thread composition, plunger, expiration, etc.

Opinions and/or experience please.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
